Mrs. Kane undertakes all the adoption paper work for Mr. Thatcher. The parties agree for Charles adoption with Kane family receiving $1000 yearly payment. Initially, Mr. Kane is dissatisfied with the agreement but his wife objects his demand telling him to stop this nonsense. Kane finally stops his complaints when he is assured of payments. Charles on the other hand, strongly wants to stay with his mother. He is not interested on the promise of wealth he is given for leaving his mother. At the end, Charles leaves for his new home; he leaves his sledge and takes a new one as a change to a new life. The flashback scene illustrates Charles background, it becomes useful in making audience appreciates Charles developmental stages. The scene brings out important techniques of foreshadowing, effective transitions and flashbacks. Charles mo ther gives him a childhood ending as he matures into adulthood. Charles on his own rejects his father as a sign that his is a grownup who can make his own decisions. The scene has four individual scenes. The first scene is in the house where Mr. Thatcher and Kanes are discussing about Charles leaving. The second scene depicts all the parties plus Charles outside the house. Third scene comes with change in time; the sledge is shown a lone. Another change in time and location is shown in the fourth scene where Charles opens a new sledge. The scene is composed of shots in the house depicting walls and ceilings signifying the activities in the house. The outside scene is composed of grownups shots with Charles in their middle. The group frames Charles as the focal point. The house has a lot of space. It lacks many toys characteristic of children houses. This shows that Mr. Kane had planned to send Charles away. The space in the house is also a symbol of Mr. Kane heartlessness toward hi s son, Charles. The space reduces as Charles leave Kanes, a sign that he is powerless amidst the parties. The significant prop in the film is Charles sledge, rosebud. Charles moves with Mr. Thatcher while his rosebud is left covered in snow. This is a symbol of Charles abandoning his childhood and family. He pushes away Mr. Thatcher with his sledge, a sign that he was not ready to part with his childhood. Charles is struggling with mightier powers to maintain his childhood but he is finally overcome and joins the Thatcher family.
